In past decades, K+S Kali GmbH has undertaken much to improve the environmental situation on the Werra and Weser rivers and will invest a further 400 million euros in water protection in the years to come. Between 1997 and 2015, K + S reduced saline wastewater by almost two thirds. The Kainit Cristallization Flotation facility (KCF) on which construction work has already started will lead to another significant reduction of a good 20% in quantities of saline wastewater from 2018 onward.

Three self-cooling submersible pumps of type EO 8-250 HUM 4, with a 132 kW motor power each, distribute stacked saline wastewater from the storage ponds 7 and 8 to the sites Wintershall and Hattorf, where the wastewater will be recycled or discharged in the Werra at high river level.
